Kirsten Flagstad as Elsa from Richard Wagner's Lohengrin

Norwegian soprano Kirsten Malfrid Flagstad

(12 July 1895–7 December 1962) enjoyed an illustrious career worldwide, especially at the Metropolitan Opera. Highly regarded as a Wagnerian soprano, Kirsten ranks among the greatest singers of the twentieth century, so much so that many opera critics consider her incredible voice to be "the voice of the century." Of the many critical acclaims she has received, perhaps Desmond Shawe-Taylor sums her artistry best in the New Grove Dictionary of Opera: "No one within living memory surpassed her in sheer beauty and consistency of line and tone."
